Schema theory has been widely applied to foreign language teaching, especially reading comprehension and listening in linguistics circle, while the application of schema on translation is quite little. The author will try to elucidate the phenomena of cultural differences in translation, analyze the problem of translation in-determinacy and explore the possibility of equivalent translation based on functional equivalence. The value of this thesis lies in applying a new perspective—cognitive linguistics to view the old problems and proposing solutions to these problem in light of schema theory.A successful translation requires both the correct comprehension of the source text and the exact expression in the target text. Because translation is not only a linguistic activity but also a kind of cross-cultural communication activity, the cultural differences are not only the essential reason which influence translation but also the main restricting factor of realizing equivalence in the process of expression, and they will cause some difficulty during translation activity, namely translation in-determinacy. At the same time it is the problem that a translator must face and deal with in the process of translating. The previous translation theories have covered this problem, but these theories mainly rely on the achievements in literature and culture. Comparing with these, the new cognitive linguistics is better to describe and analyze the actual problem. Therefore, the current study has...
