In the times of knowledge and information, the influence of cultural differences on global collaboration is becoming increasingly evident. In cross-cultural and cross-regional cooperation,Cultural Intelligence or Cultural Quotient(abbreviated as CQ)can help cross-cultural staff members construct intercultural awareness, acquire certain strategies to decrease the misunderstanding of regional and cultural differences, thus improve their work efficiency. At present, the research on CQ has not been systematic in China, while people are facing more crosscultural work or life situations. In this context, the introduction of CQ through some western experts to China can provide us with specialized knowledge to further understand CQ and learn CQ strategies, and ultimately to improve our intercultural communication competence. The source text of this translation practice comes from the preface and chapter 1-3 of The Cultural Intelligence Difference. This book provides readers with systematic strategies to improve CQ from four aspects of CQ Drive,CQ Knowledge,CQ Strategy, and CQ Action, which can effectively offer an approach to readers’ CQ enhancement.Based on the practicality of The Cultural Intelligence Difference and its colloquial style, the translator considers that the theory of Functional Equivalence fits for a positive role of guiding theory in the translation practice as it emphasizes that the translation should pay attention to information transmission and reader’s response.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, this report analyzes the translation of words, sentences and paragraphs with colloquial style from English to Chinese. At the lexical level, compound words, verb phrases, and slangs are frequently used in the source text. The translator used free translation, reverse translation, rewriting and other methods to convey the original information to the readers based on retaining the colloquial style of the source text.At the syntactic level,as most of the sentences with colloquial style are direct speech and loose sentences, during the translating, the translator adopted linear translation, amplification, omission to make the target readers and the original readers react in the same way. However, since the author also used long sentences in the book, reconstruction and division were utilized to conform to the colloquial style. At the textual level, translation methods such as combination, amplification, linear translation were chosen to achieve the purpose of making some featured sentence structures clear in colloquial text. After this translation practice,it is discovered that with the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, the translated version can not only verify the accuracy of information but also make readers have a pleasurable reading experience. The translator wishes that through the translation and introduction of The Cultural Intelligence Difference,it would give an effective CQ perspective to those cross-cultural staff members. Also,by drawing people’s attention to cultural intelligence,CQ can purposefully improve their cultural intelligence and cross-cultural communicative competence.Meanwhile,it is hoped that this report would provide a reference for future translators who would do the same type of text.
