The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) , a well-known standardized language test, is not only an evaluation for linguistic competence but also an important motivation to reform the method and material of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. However, less attention is paid to the relationship between items of HSK and exercises of teaching books, thus no applicable and new methodology available to guide the design of exercises. In this paper, the author firstly emphasizes the relationship between HSK and teaching. Then, to explore efficient exercise designing methods for reading course, the paper compares the different item formats between HSK (elementary and intermediate) and six sets of widely-used reading books, and points out the significance of exercise design for language teaching and some weaknesses in books. As a convincing reference, results of the questionnaire to overseas and teachers give some constructive suggestions. In view of the current limitations in the textbooks design, this paper suggests 4 points: 1. draw lessons from material choosing of HSK; 2.pay more attention to the diversification of exercise types; 3. strengthen vocabulary practice and work out more valid items; 4. combine reading skill and language competence .
