Textbook is the fundamental in the field of foreign language teaching. As one ofthe core parts of teaching material, the quality of exercise directly influents on theoverall quality of the textbook. Task-based language teaching theory, an effectivemethod in second language acquisition, aims at enabling learners to learn the targetlanguage through the completion of tasks. A “task” here is not a language problem,but one that demands learners to complete by using the target language incommunication. So learning by doing is to develop the communicative competenceof learners, which is also supposed to be one of the important goals of languagelearning as well as course exercise. Based on the task-based teaching theory, thepresent study aims to set somehow a model and find out the principle and theconcrete practice regarding to the design of the intensive reading exercise in theCollege English course book. Both questionnaire and interview are used as theresearch methods to gain objective findings of feelings and expectations of teachersand students regarding to the exercises. And then vocabulary, reading comprehension,cloze, writing, translation and oral exercise are respectively discussed, with thecorresponding procedures or examples in each part based on the main theories.Through this study, the author hopes to cast new light on the exercise design with theapplication of task-based teaching theory and be helpful to the development ofcompilation and evaluation of college English intensive reading books.
