Yunnan is a big province in terms of tourism, and the hotel service plays an important role in tourism trade, so the quality of hotel service has become an important factor to affect the development of the tourism in Yunnan. Vocational schools have been shouldering the mission for training the highly- qualified hotel clerks. Hotel English is one of the main courses for the students who major in Hotel Service. Since the quality of Hotel English teaching is closely related to the quality of hotel clerks to some degree, how to improve Hotel English teaching has become a key issue for the teachers who are working at it. As an ESP(English for Specific Purposes) teacher, the researcher is especially concerned with ESP teaching in vocational schools. This thesis reports on an exploration about the present Hotel English teaching in several vocational schools in Yunnan province.The study reports the procedures and results of a questionnaire to about sixty-four students who are learning Hotel English in two vocational schools and interviews to six ESP teachers from the two schools. The study attempts to reveal the present situation of Hotel English teaching and find the effective measures to improve it through the author's research. The study has clarified the situation and problems in the present Hotel English teaching by a quantitative analysis of questionnaire and a comprehensive analysis of interviews, from which a final result has been concluded that the Hotel English teaching in vocational schools need to be greatly improved as soon as possible.The results of the study indicate that the present problems in Hotel English teaching are mainly from three aspects: teachers, students and schools. After analyzing these problems carefully, the researcher puts forward her own suggestions and viewpoints about how to improve them. The researcher takes the view that the key points of improving Hotel English teaching is that firstly ESP teachers should improve their teaching behaviors and methods, secondly, the teachers also should help the students to change their English learning attitudes and to develop their English learning strategies, and thirdly, the schools should strengthen the supervision and administration to their teachers' teaching. On account of the fact that the Hotel English teaching in vocational schools of Yunnan has not been given enough attention these years, the researcher wishes that the study could devote its active bit to the development in this field.
