To match the world-class tourist destination city,greater demands for English are being placed on the employees,especially for those who work for high-level hotels.Shanghai vocational schools have begun to give Hotel Service English course in the major of high-level hotel operation and management.In order to improve the teaching effect,teachers often use situational language teaching in their teaching process,but how to create appropriate situations is still confusing a lot of related teachers.Based on constructivism theory,situational cognition theory and Krashen's input hypothesis theory,the characteristics of vocational education courses and the practical situation of secondary vocational students,this thesis researches on the creation of appropriate situations for secondary vocational Hotel Service English teaching.The research questions include: 1.What problems are there in the situational teaching of Hotel Service English? 2.How to carry out situational teaching effectively in Hotel Service English classes? 3.Can situational teaching improve students' English academic performance and professional quality?This research started with the interview with the HR from Shanghai well-known hotels.The questionnaire was delivered to some teachers and students to get a picture of the current situation and the main deficiencies of situational teaching in the classroom teaching of Hotel Service English.Then the twenty-week teaching experiment aiming at addressing the problems began.The using of situation language teaching in the process of leading-in,presentation,summary and homework was elucidated.The effect of the experiment was assessed through the change of students' academic achievement and questionnaire feedback.The conclusion as follows is drawn from the analysis of the experimental data and students' questionnaire survey: First of all,the current situational language teaching in the teaching of Hotel Service English has not taken into account students' ?students' interest and job demand,so the situational teaching has not fully played itsrole in the teaching of Hotel Service English.Secondly,it is conducive to raising teaching effect to exert the different roles of situational language teaching in the process of leading-in,presentation,summary and homework based on the characteristics of secondary vocational students and vocational teaching.Finally,situational teaching is beneficial to the improvement of students' English grades and students' professional quality.To sum up,situational teaching is a positive factor for Hotel Service English teaching.The author hopes that this research can offer some inspiration and reference for the front-line English teachers in vocational schools.
