The Role Of The Context In Cultural Translation

The concept of context was first raised by the famous anthropologist-Malinowski in the 1920s. In the following years, with the development of semantics and pragmatics, and also with the deep research on language, more and more linguisticians realized the importance of context. As is known to all that language is the carrier of culture. It's full of deepgoing connotation. Translation belongs to language activity. At the same time, it is a kind of thinking activity. It consists of a large number of non-linguistic elements. So many problems are difficult to solve from language aspect. Translation is not the simple change according to the surface meaning of language and the single combination on form. It needs to penetrate the surface, with the guide of context and try to fathom the author's genuine intention. So the translator must ingeniously wield the two different structures and culture knowledge, turn one language's information into another's. The translator should not only proficiently master the two languages, but also synthetically use the knowledge of context as far as possible, so as to make the translation accurate and appropriate.Translation research is a systematic learning, and context is also a systematic learning. Translation cannot depart from context either on theory or on practice. From the perspective of systemic functional linguistics, this thesis discusses the features and types of context and analyzes the functions of context in cultural translation. Then the author makes a conclusion on the advantages and disadvantages of systemic-functional linguistics context.The first part is introduction, in which the research questions, background and significance of the study are stated.The second part consists of five chapters.
