On The Word Families Theory Of Shen Jianshi's

Shen Jianshi, one of the greatest philologer of modern times on Chinese language, devotes himself to the Chinese language study. His outstanding academic achievement is that he builds up the theory of root of the words and the word families. His theory on the word families is based on the former scholars. His theory, root of the words and the word families, absorbs the quintessence of the former scholars and redress the former theories and what is more he brings in the theory of language from foreign countries which builds the foundation of Chinese lexicology and root of the words. It is regrettable that his theory and achievement is ignored. The scholars after Shen Jianshi often quote his theories but there is no dissertation that gives a general introduction on his theory. His theory is so profound that it require the modern scholars to do much more research on it. It is of great importance to analyze and summarize his theory.This paper is made up of five parts:The introduction gives an introduction of his academic achievements, the background of his word families, the value of the research on his theory and the materials the research involved.The first chapter gives a presentation of Shen Jianshi's word family theory.The second chapter describes Shen Jianshi?research method.The third chapter compares Shen Jianshi with Zhang Taiyan and Yang Shuda to find the characteristic of the three.The last chapter is conclusion, which shows the merits and demerits in his theory and points out what we should inherit and develop, what we need to make perfect, what we should criticize.
