The Independent Thinking School is represented by Yao Jiheng, Cui Shu and Fang Yurun among the studies of the Book of Songs in Qing Dynasty. The scholars researching on the Book of Songs sing high praise for the Independent Thinking School in recent years. There are a lot of case studies of Shi Jing Tong Lun made by Yao Jiheng, Du Feng Ou Zhi by Cui Shu, and Shi Jing Yuan Shi by Fang Yurun. However, little has been done with regarding the three persons as a school. This paper focuses on the Independent Thinking School as a whole. On the basis of the case studies, the writer reveals the relationship between them, summaries the connotation of this school, and combines the establishment of the position of the Independent Thinking School with the New Cultural Movement. This paper consists of six parts:Introduction. Making a brief review of the origin of the Independent Thinking School and explaining the significance of choosing this subject.Chapter One: the study of the Book of Songs of Shi Jing Tong Lun. This chapter discusses the method by which Yao Jiheng studies the Book of Songs from the perspective of the criticism of Shi Jing Tong Lun on Xiao Xu; analyzes the nature of criticism on Zhu Xi's filthy poems by Yao Jiheng; and summarizes the achievement which Shi Jing Tong Lun criticizes the Book of Songs from the perspective of literature. It's discovered that the basic method by which Shi Jing Tong Lun studies the Book of Songs is exploring the meaning of poems through intensive reading of text, which corresponds with Zhu Xi's method; Yao Jiheng's criticism on Zhu Xi's filthy poems partly diverges from the method of studying the Book of Songs; The achievement which Shi Jing Tong Lun studies the Book of Songs from the perspective of literature is reflected on the evaluating on language, art features and the comparison between the Book of Songs and the later ages literature from the perspective of the literature history.
