The language learning strategies (LLS) research, originating in the middle of 1970s, is becoming popular in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). This branch of inquiry not only explores the general theoretical descriptions but also attaches importance to its application—language learning strategy training. The LLS research is based on the hypothesis that in language learning activities learners make use of a variety of strategies to improve their performance. As a major component of learning ability, the appropriate use of strategies can bring learning efficiency. But learners vary greatly in their strategy knowledge and capability of using such knowledge. Therefore, a tailored training program can help raise learners' consciousness and appropriateness in employing their strategies. The effectiveness of training is closely related to what, when and how a strategy training program is implemented. So far most studies concerning strategy training have featured vocabulary learning and various language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing, and their reports on training effects are rather diverse. This thesis deals with lexical inferencing strategy training. The researcher launched a strategy training program, which lasted six weeks, in one of his College English classes. Prior to the training all the participants attended two vocabulary size tests and a pretest. Then the researcher directed them to identify and employ a series of context clues by strategy illustration, modeling, drills and after-class consolidation activities. At the end of the training, the posttest was administered. An analysis of the data collected from the pretest, the vocabulary size tests, the in-class quizzes and the...
