This study was devoted to examining the influence of reading ability and reading speed on text signal effects concerning second language reading. As the results of recall and problem solving turned out, the application of text signals exerted significant effects on the reading performance of Chinese undergraduates. However, the effects on students of different reading ability varied. The qualitatitive effect was found on the expert readers and the quantitative effect on the novice readers. Meanwhile, students' reading performance improved with a signaled text whether at normal reading speed or at fast speed.
