Art Nouveau started in the end of nineteenth century and modernism design in the 1920's. The paper focuses on the relativity of these two schools.Art Nouveau is a special period in the history of western art, which witnesses the transformation from the traditional decoration to the modern design. As a turning point, it will play a big role afterwards. In the late eighteenth century, modern industry made great achievements in the world. Meanwhile, remarkable growth took place in literary art and democratic thought. All these cannot fail to exert great influence on art designers and architects. The subtle influence makes designers change their concepts and the changed concepts in turn present themselves in the form of production. Moreover, designers draw experience from practice and come up with many relevant theories and apply them to the reform of design education. The paper is intended to analyze the sameness and difference between art nouveau and modernism design in terms of concept, form and theory and accordingly to get a clear path of development from traditional art to modern art.
