Contemporary Chinese writer LiRui's full-length novel,The Story of Silver City, was firstpublished in Harvest Magazine 2002(1),its separate edition was published by The ChangjiangRiver Literature and Art Publishing House in May of the same year.Though this novel exertedan influence in China and other countries, the relevant comments were limited in number as aresult of short time. And most researches neglected complexity of the novel's historicalnarration to varying degrees, some viewpoints were simple and abstract. We can tentativelyjudge that it is a historical novel from readers' reading experience and LiRui's creativeconsciousness. It is necessary for us to clean up the knowledge about history, then differentiateand analyse the shared essential factor in history and novel, narration.Obviously it will dogood to grasp the relation between history and novel. The graduation thesis's research method draws support from two theory. One is themethod combining diachronic analysis with synchronic analysis which was put forward byAmerican scholar Fredric Jameson in his Unconsciousness of Politics. The other one is themethod of mutual proving between literature and history which was raised by modernChinese historian ChenYinque.First,I engage in textual research on authenticity of the typicalcharacter, plot and background in The Story of Silver City by means of relevant document andhistorical materials.Second,I make use of the theory of French The Annals SchoolHistoriography to research LiRui's conception of history.Third,I probe into the problems oftheme, fictitious characters, language feature, contingency and destiny in The Story of SilverCity in the horizon of neo-historicism novel creative trend.Fourth,I inquire into liberalistLiRui's intellectual crisis, this novel's ideological implication, the limitations andtranscendence of LiRui's conception of history in historical context of contemporary China in1990s.At last,I prospect the new probability of historical narration in 21th century Chineseliterature.
