The conception of "coping" was firstly put forth in the Sixties of the 20th century. Basedon Freud's recovery mechanism theory and stress theory, many psychologists, for exampleLazarus, introduced the conception of "coping" into the recognition evaluation theory inconjunction with the clinical psychology. Moreover, two approaches, i.e. the trait-orientedapproach and the process-oriented approach, were developed, which discussed the externaland internal factors influencing coping processes. These two theories have their ownadvantages and disadvantages, so some researchers further introduced the phenomenologyinteraction theory. The present study investigated the relationship among the personality factor, thesubjective stress and the coping style and further created the path model of them, by adopting225 students of higher and lower grades in Ji Lin Judicatory Constable Institute and using thequestionnaire in conjunction with consulting methods. The results showed that: (1) Therewere significant differences on the coping styles and personality factors between students ofthe two grades. Specifically speaking, with the increasing of the grades, mature coping stylesincreased while immature coping styles decreased. And, there were significant differences onsubjective stress and personality factor between male and female students. Female students'asking for help coping style was significantly higher than male students. (2) Subjective stresshad significant positive correlations with problem solving and asking for help mature copingstyle, and had significant negative correlations with retreat, self-reproach, illusion andrationalization. Personality factor had positive correlations with most of the coping styles.Additionally, the extraversion and the lie dimensions of the personality factor have significantnegative correlations with the amount of subjective stress. The neuroticism and thepsychpathia have significant positive correlations with personality factor. (3) Treating thecoping style as the dependent variant and the personality factor as the independent variant, thepersonality factor significantly entered the regression equation with different coping styles. After the sum of subjective stress was included, the predictability of the personality factor onthe coping style was weakened while its total explanation on the coping style was enhanced.(4) The personality factor and the level of subjective stress had direct influences on the copingstyle. Meanwhile, the personality factor had indirect influences on the coping style throughsubjective stress. (5) The level of subjective stress was the intermediate value of thepersonality factor and the coping style.
