Popularizing drawing, closely related to politics, economy and culture in terms of its creation and form, has presented its colorful features and styles corresponding to the 20th century when China developed like a rising wind and scudding clouds. The transferring period from new democratism to socialism (1949-1956) signifies the watershed in the development of Chinese political popularizing drawing and it has its unique characteristics. This thesis attempts to explore the political popularizing drawings in this period from the angles of artistic features, influence factors and historic value.In respect to artistic features, the thesis and subject of the popularizing drawing in this period evolved from the sarcastic and revolutionary drawings against imperialism and feudalism, such as those against the united army of eight countries, against the Beiyang government, anti- Japan war, the liberation war, etc. to the eulogization drawing of new China's construction, such as "anti- America and aiding Korea war", "three anti movements and five anti movements", marriage law, increasing production and stinting and so on. As to the form, before the foundation of new China the drawings usually adopted cartoon, sarcastic drawing and woodcarving, etc, which feature the distinctive theme, lucid image and strong and contradistinctive black and white colors. After the liberation, the drawings mainly employ painting, water powder and water color, etc; in regard to the style it takes on a new look with powerful shaping, complicated background and fiery color. With the coming of the climacteric (1949-1956) from new democratism to socialism, the creation team of the popularizing drawing has presented a multielement trend. A group of professionaldrawers appeared, such as Ha Qiongwen, Weng Yizhi, Wu Min, You Longgu, Wu Xingqing, Qian Daxin, Yang Wenxiu and Zhang Ruji, etc. The situation of replacing popularizing drawings with woodcarvings and cartoons has also been changed. Meanwhile, as the van of plastic arts in the early years after the foundation of new China, the art of the political popularizing drawing has attracted many painters, traditional Chinese painters and New Year drawers, who were greatly concerned with and created political popularizing drawings with their own professional skills. In addition, plenty of groups and individuals of amateurs also show strong interest in this kind of drawings.The political popularizing drawing in this period (1949-1956) was influenced by social politics, the Soviet Union, Polish popularizing drawings and Chinese folk paintings. The need of social politics makes the political popularizing drawings in this period the vanguard of plastic arts and it became the theme and subject of the drawings. The arts of The Soviet Union and Poland, and Chinese folk arts influenced this period's drawing's form and style.As a connecting link between the preceding and the following in Chinese political popularizing drawings in the 20th century, the political popularizing drawings of this period (1949-1956) ushered in a new theme and style and displayed its unique historic value, artistic value and aesthetic value.
