This paper makes a complete study on Verb in Mo Zi about Valence. It tries to describe all verbs' valence, verbs' ability to attach dependency constituents and those constituents' semantic character."Valence" is defined by L.Tesniere in France. This theory advocates that verb is the core of a sentence and other constituents are attached to verb. This theory was brought to our country in the late of last century and was paid great attention. But nowadays, the study on this area in our country is limited in present Chinese language. So this paper wants to put this theory on the study in ancient Chinese language. On the other hand, Mo Zi is a very important book in Xianqin period. But the study on its language is not enough. So it is necessary for us to research its language. And we can learn the language situation of Xianqin period through Mo Zi.This paper confirms that the grammatical character of Valence is either semantics or syntax; the amount of Valence was defined by indispensable dependency constituents in atomic sentence; the indispensable preposition constituents exist. Through comprehensive study, this paper divides all verbs in Mo Zi into five kinds: monvalent verb, preposition bivalent verb, bivalent verb, preposition trivalent verb, trivanlent verb. Then, it describes the amount of valence, the semantic character of indispensable dependency constituents and the examples in the book. |
