It is a universal phenomenon to make comparison between different people and different things in nature. So is the comparison between languages. In 1960s contrastive linguistics, as a branch of linguistics, broke the limitation of study at the sentence level but extended to a larger unit — text. Cohesion, as an important category in contrastive textual linguistics, mutual-infiltrates and influences with so many related subjects as stylistics, translation studies, aesthetics, syntax and pragmatics, etc. Therefore, combining textual cohesion with stylistics, the thesis makes an attempt to explore the interrelationships between the two subjects. The previous contrastive studies on cohesive devices between English and Chinese texts are mainly based on the observation of literary works, the findings may not be applicable to the text of science and technology, which is a special genre characterized by accuracy, brevity and rigor. Thus, the thesis is developed under the guidance of Halliday's functional linguistics. Through the statistical analysis, a synchronic contrast on cohesive devices between EST and CST is made in expectation of shedding lights on translation. There are six chapters in the thesis. The first chapter introduces the theoretical background, motives and objectives of the study. The second chapter depicts the cohesion theory and relevant notions in detail, with an emphasis on illustrating the applicability of cohesion theory to the Chinese texts. The third chapter is an empirical study, which begins with a case study, then statistical research is made on the population, and on the basis of which the author generalizes the similarities and dissimilarities between the two text types. And possible reasons are explored from the aspect of linguistic system. The following chapter points out the significance of the study to language teaching and translating. And the fifth chapter proposes several applicable strategies for E-C translation. Finally, the conclusion part clarifies...
