On The Art Of Traditional Finery Design In China

China undergoes a glary history with its ancient civilization and many great inventions, which have made contributions to world cultures. Finery plays an important role in Chinese cultures. It aims to prevent from cold, wet, or shame at the beginning, and then develops to show status or identify grade, or for decorating rather than utility. Chinese finery has accumulated a countless of fashion types and patterns through a successive of thousands of years. The design idea and art represented by this finery is a crystal of countless artists'wisdom. In ancient times, people worn some leaves or hides in order to adapted themselves to surroundings, such as clime. With the development of social needs and clothing materials, the concept of fashion design has became clear and concrete gradually. For example, designers devised collars, arms, and cesti with refined geometry patterns. After entering into feudalistic society. . Chinese traditional finery is a precious treasure of Chinese people. It is very important to study and refer to Chinese heritage of finery because "history didn't go beyond the succession of generations."And each generation takes advantage of material, funds and productive forces left by the former one. For this reason, traditional finery culture has been accumulated and handed down generation by generation, so that the style could be kept stable and continuous. Though each generation has to choose from traditions elements which are suitable for them, and they won't just copy conventions simply, it is sure that we can't walk into a completely new realm without predecessors' wisdom. This paper aims to investigate artistic representation of Chinese finery, mainly focus on two aspects: culture and design of Chinese traditional finery. This paper begins with the introduction of history of traditional finery design in China and its role in period of history, and then analyzes the connotation of culture of Chinese traditional finery, including the relationships of traditional philosophy, traditional cosmology, and traditional ethic. In the following part, the paper explores artistic representation of Chinese traditional finery design from four aspects: design types, pattern designs, color designs, and figure designs.
