The inscription of our country has long standing and well established history andvarious styles. As prose sport leaders of different eras, Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu runafter fame seriously at that time, their works has extremely important studying valuein the history of the inscription. Because of era, style of writing, temperament,experience, and so on, their inscriptions demonstrate obvious difference in suchaspects as scale, style, value, position. Comparing their works can observe the gentledeveloping orbit in Tang-Song period of the inscription better , and can enlighten therealization of the difference of the two generations' style of writing and old scholar'sprevailing custom thoroughly . Han Yu's inscription is short and small. Its structure is flexible, its tactics arevarious and its passion is plentiful basically. But the quantity of Ouyang Xiu'sinscription is numerous. Its section cut down regularly, its material is abundant andthe charm ripples .The styles of inscription between the two people are different too.In the narration, one is mighty, the other is leisure; in expressing emotion, one isunbridled ,the other is mellow; in drawing materials, one is remarkable, the other isorthodox. Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu's inscriptions on friends are all emphasized inselected works of later ages. Their aesthetic value, which goes beyond those works ofthe other subjects, is worth being compared thoroughly. Inscriptions on women playan important part in probing women's destiny. Han Yu's inscriptions succeed in liberating inscriptions from a practical writingand make it a literature type, which strengthens the content of narration, transplantsvarious literature tactics among them .Thus the aesthetic connotation of inscriptionsis more abundant . Ouyang Xiu brought history feelings into his inscriptions,whoseappraisal is rigorous .Its material is full and accurate. So his inscriptions changedirection in historiography value, which set an example on the later people. Through the comparison of these aspects of their inscription, we will find HanYu's has opened up the literature function of inscriptions; Ouyang Xiu's has givenprominence to the historiography value of inscription.
