This thesis intends to generalize the modernistic features contained in Stephen Crane's fiction, which mainly covers one of his novels, The Red Badge of Courage, two short stories, The Open Boat and The Blue Hotel, aimed to justify that Stephen Crane, who is generally considered a naturalist, can be also regarded as a modernist, for in his writing many modernistic techniques are frequently employed. The modernistic features this thesis generalize include the third-person limited point of view and the juxtaposition of contrasting points of view, the modernistic themes embodied in his fiction such as illusion, alienation, cosmic indifference and the relationship between Man and Nature, and the various ways of utilizing literary symbols that pertain to symbolism, such as image, color and character.
