Ancient potteries and porcelains play the most important part in the market of artwork We won't feel astonished at those sold at a high price of one hundred million, but few of us comes to realize the fact that the long period during which potteries and porcelains were developed from practical use to a form of art is highly worthy of studying.(During the prehistoric era, colorful decorations were added to the surface of 6rownware. Our ancestors actively injected beauty into them, making them attractive to people's sights. In Tang dynasty, tea drinking was a popular activity among literati Many ancient poets not only liked tasting nice tealeaves, 6ut also appreciating precious ceramic tea services. They were the main forces that propel Chinese ceramics towards the field of art. Under these circumstances, they strictly followed the advices given by "Cha Jing", a famous book written by Lu Yu, to classify different kinds of ceramic tea services. Also, they gave extremely high praises to the teacups made in Yue kiln, due to its charming appearance.(people of Song dynasty started to shift their focus from the historical documents to ancient bronzes and stone tablets, because these antiques usually had inscriptions that could tell them a lot about the past times. Jilso, the number of people who was interested in collecting antiques was growing. However, the rise of epigraphy didn't stimulate the appreciation and research of ancient potteries and porcelains, because the main task of epigraphy is to find and study the meaning of the inscriptions instead of the beauty of the antique itself In sprite of that, several well-known kilns, for example, Ru kiln, still won enough appreciation and praise at that time. The name of these kilns were mentioned again and again in several books of that time, such as "Lao Xue An Bi Ji", "Tun ran Guo Tan Lu", "Qing (Bo Za Zhi", etc.Shanren, which appeared widely in Ming dynasty, were a large group of people eager to hide away from the harsh reality. In order to comfort their unbalanced heart, they call for an elegant and tasteful lifestyle. (By using all kinds of things carefully decorated and listed, they could be differed from ordinary people. They used quiet but beautiful ceramics made by famous or official kilns. Thus, potteries and porcelains were classified into elegant ones and vulgar ones. All these result in the occurrence of the ceramic aesthetics, Among the books that dealt with the ceramic aesthetics, "Zun Sheng Ba Jian"(by Gao Lian) and "Zhang Wu Zhi"(by Wen Zhengheng) were recognized as the modelIt was not until Qing dynasty that the research of potteries and porcelains came into existence. Vnder the circumstance that more and more people, besides the intellectuals, joined in collecting exquisite ancient potteries and porcelains, a group of experts professional in discrimination occurred They wrote down their experience, having it published A new subjectaimed at appreciating, judging ancient potteries and porcelains gradually became mature. Nevertheless, the method they took was unscientific, thus, the achievements they reached were inevitably limited. Vntil at last, modern methods of archaeology helped make this subject more scientific and progressive.Studying this period, we can refresh our understanding of Chinese culture history as well as take a close look at ancient people's thoughts and life. But it is a pity that such an important period has received no attention even though great progress has been made in the field of ceramic history, ceramic technology and ceramic aesthetics. Considering the fact that no one has paid enough attention to this period mentioned above, I made an intention to raise this problem and give it a general research. There are three chapters forming my essay. The first chapter, namely prodrome, lists both the accomplishments made and the problems confronted in the field of ceramic study, showing the original intention of the essay. The second chapter discovers the bom and the development of people's consciousness to appreciate and research ceramics. The...
