Recent years have witnessed great development in the translation studies. What'smore important, linguistic analyses have found wide use in translating. As is well known,a thorough exposition has been accorded context and translation among currenttranslation studies. This paper is concerned with translation and, in particular, withproposing this new orientation to the study of translation. In this thesis, emphasis is puton the roles and uses of context in translating. It begins with a discussion of relationsbetween context and translation, followed by an investigation on the concept of contextin a linguistic perspective, finally, the application of context in the whole process oftranslation is illustrated with examples. At the same time some methods for eliminatingtranslators'dilemma are presented, which are both effective and practicable. The author tends to prove the significance of context in an overall translation.Accordingly, this thesis is organized in such a way as to explain first a number of theimportant features of translation and then those of context in its relation to translationactivities. In Chapter 1, a brief introduction to the background of the study is presentedwith careful observations. Chapter 2 deals with the relations between context andtranslation, in which the nature and features of translation are treated respectively. InChapter 3, the reader is referred to a complete literature review of the past and presentcontext theories, which is accomplished by quoting from quite a few renowned linguists. In addition, the classifications and functions of context are summarized. Chapter 4 isconcerned with the concept of context in a pragmatic perspective, a common approachin translation studies. Chapter 5 discusses the hierarchical nature of translation contextand its various uses in translating are elaborated with plenty of cases in point. Chapter 6is concerned with how text translations are influenced by context, whose emphasis islaid on the application of translation contexts in text translations. A further study on therole of context in style reproduction is discussed briefly. In Chapter 7, a conclusion isdrawn on the basis of the previous studies that context does play an increasinglyimportant role in the perfect rendering of source texts into target language. Thus, thepaper proves the point that context is an integral part of translation.
