Besieged Fortress is a masterpiece in the history of Chinese modern literature. It has double themes: One is a reflection of life; the other is a reflection of society.As for the theme of life inside the Besieged Fortress, the author depicts Fang Hongjian's life predicament and the cause of it as well as his attitudes towards difficulties, revealing the besieged state of the marriage of human beings and the besieged state of the main character's cause and fate. The novel reflects the going-down-in-form problems of life through the going-up-in-form specific details. Thus, the readers could draw some lessons about life through Fang's tragic story.As for the theme about society outside the besieged Fortress, the author criticizes the social culture and expresses his distressed feelings about society through the description of the personalities and wicked behavior of well-educated persons.In short, Besieged Fortress is a novel with profound thematic and philosophical implications of human nature. It has social width, historical depth and philosophical height.
