Duan Keji and Duan Chengji, the prominent litterateurs and recluses in late Jin and early Yuan Dynasties, showed great talents at the very early age and were called "Two Wonders" by Zhao Bingwen, Minister of Rites. Both of them passed mperial civil examinations and quitted the official career since the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty. They were "regarded as the example of the Confucius scholars by the people at that time". According to Mr. Tang Guizhang's Complete Ci of Jin and Yuan Dynasties, the "Two Wonders" wrotel30 ci poems. Their writing was the output of the recluse culture during the historical period from Jin to Yuan Dynasty. It reflected the state of mind of the Confucius scholars in the transitional period, that is, the double sufferings of the survivor awareness and conflict between the Han Nationality and the minorities. Their ci writing followed the style of Jiaxuan and presented he unique atheistic quest of the Northern School Ci by melting strong life consciousness into the works.
