Unique Marginal Way

As one of the earliest novelist of Beijing School,Fei Ming(1901-1967) produced novels basically between 1920's and 1940's before the Liberation with his ever-changing creative style.His literature theories and works typically represented the orientation of culture value of scholar-typed writers who had both western and Chinese traditional knowledge.With Fei Ming's literature theories and works befor 1949 as the foothold and the orientation of culture value as the point of contact,this thesis analyses the issue of the orientation of culture and agricultural civilization of Fei Ming,a scholar-typed writer with western educational background.and seeks for the connotative cultureal meaning beneath his theories and works.Fei Ming's writing style is simple,plain and wtrong rural flavor,which emphases the sentiment and bourn,and possesses deep marking of Chinese traditional culture,this is a great contrast with Fei Ming's education background:he graduated from the Deparment of Western Language and Literature of Beijing University.He was deeply influenced by some western masters such as George Eliot who wrote The Mill on the Floss, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra,a Spanish writer.who wrote Don Quixote,and Thomas Hardy,who wrote a great mangy of novels about country side. According to the ordinary developing track, Fei Ming should have excludedor completely abandoned the comparatively old and backward culture tradition and thoroughly turned to western modern expressive way.However,in terms of both theories and works, Fei Ming regressed to the traditional native culture.His orientation of culture value inclined to traditional and classical culture which correspondingly affected his orientation of literture value. Fei Ming chose Chinese traditional culture as the foundation of his theories and production and eulogized the harmony and beauty of Chinese traditional civilization with his poetic style of writing.Theoretically,he traced Chinese classical culture and impenetrated this thought into his writing process.Even faced with cruel realities, Fei Ming still immersed in traditional culture and couldn't forget his own ideal.In contrast with the mainstream environment of that time, Fei Ming's choose was unique and isolated,but also inner-directed.Although he was against the grain in the tide of enlightenment and saving the nation form extinction,he piled out his own way in the converge of Chinese traditional and western cultures,insteed of spurning the tradition blindly. Fei Ming's choose was wise,and,we may say,a kind of special reality.Although in the primary tide of enlightenment and saving the nation from extinction. Fei Ming didn't abandon his literary notion and didn't plunge himself into the mainstream culture impatiently,he made a great contribution to renewed cognizance of advantagement of Chinese classical culture.which incarnated his conscience as a litterateur. Fei Ming was so sentimentally attached to Chinese traditional culture that his plain writing style and his unque marginal cultureal way took shape gradually in the early 20th century when weatern culture strongly intruding into the literary circles of China.
