Mysterious referred to a philosophical trend that developed in the Wei and Jin period, and was mainly characterized by adapting Taoist doctrines to Confucianism. The most important representatives of the school included Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. They developed their own theories and reinterpreted Confucianism through their commentaries on The Book of Master Lao, The Book of Master Zhuang, and The Book of Changes (known as the three profound studies). The Hermeneutics was the most important ways to Mysterious, and it was the mostly content of this dissertation.Wang Bi was one of the most famous Neo-Taoists of the Wei-Jin period. He had inaugurated a new movement, for he raised the level of Chinese thought to that of metaphysics. He had several influential philosophical works surviving, such as A Commentary on the Book of Changes and A Commentary on the Book of Master Lao. According to this theory, nonbeing is substance and being is function; substance and are identified. So he said in A Commentary on the Book of Master Lao: All things in the universe come from being, and the original of being is nonbeing. In order to have being in total, it is necessary to return to nonbeing. He also stated that things in the universe are extremely numerous, but the origin is one. That is the Way or nonbeing. In epistemology, Wang maintained that word serve to explain symbols and symbols and symbols serve to express ideas. Once the symbols have been grasped, the words may be forgotten; once the ideas have been grasped, the symbols may be forgotten.Guo Xiang was a Neo-Taoist philosopher of the Wei-Jin period. In philosophy, Guo did not agree upon Wang Bi's doctrine that nonbeing is the origin of the universe. He argued: Since nonbeing is nonbeing, it cannot go on to produce being. Yet before being itself has yet been produced, it cannot go on to produce other things. What then, produces thing? They spontaneously produce themselves. ... That everything is spontaneously what it is called natural. This is famous doctrine of self-transformation. According to the theory, everything is what it is by nature, not through taking any action. Guo also held that the Confucian ethical code is not contradictory to thedoctrine of nature, for he held that the sage must be sagely within and kingly without. The basic points of view in this dissertation are, the Hermeneutics ways of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang are similar, but between them there are some differences. Wang Bi said: Once the ideas have been grasped, the words may be forgotten. He use this way to represented The Book of Master Lao and The Book of Changes, and thought Nonbeing is the origin. Guo Xiang also said that the ideas can be got from the words and be not restricted by the words. He represented The Book of Master Zhuang and advocate being. The paper consists of five parts. In chapter one, I'll introduce the Hermeneutics in the Wei and Jin period, the background of Mysterious, and the development of Mysterious. In chapter two, I'll introduce the Hermeneutics ways of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. Wang Bi venerated the fundamental to promote the incidental, and Guo Xiang advocate the ideas can be got from the words and be not restricted by the words. In chapter three, I'll construe the similarity of the Hermeneutics ways of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. The representations of the similarity are: they all represented the learning of names and principles in the Wei and Jin period; they developed their own theories by comment the three profound studies; they adapted Taoist doctrines to Confucianism. In chapter four, I'll construe the differences of the Hermeneutics ways of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. The differences included: the differences about the theories of original substance; the ideas of substance and function; the politics viewpoints and the thoughts about Sage.At the last chapter of this paper, I'll introduce the meaning of the Hermeneutics ways of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. The ways contributed to the development of the theories of original substance and the Hermeneutics. In additio...
