Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is one of the most dazzling stars in the history of the art of violin. He was a well-known person in the musical kingdom and famous worldwide with Joseph Joachim(l831-1907) for their violin skills in the late half of the nineteen's century. As a violinist, Sarasate represented a kind of completely new performance style of the violin. As a composer, his works won universal praise.He has made special contributions to the enrichment of the violin works. It was unfair that, though his performance had been given very high appraisal, yet his compositions had been often overlooked. He composed fifty-four works in his whole life and many of them are still touchstones for the violinists, for example "Zigeunerweisen", "Fantasy on Carmen", "Introduction et tarantella"and "Spanish dance".The paper mainly studies Sarasate. It analyzes his artistic style completely in composition and performance. Every age has its unique spiritual temperament and intellectual sign, and the artistic creation,including music, is the offspring of the spirit of age fundamentally and is restricted by the spirit of age, at the same time, the artistic creation also contributes to the forming of the spirit of age.For this reason, regarding Sarasate as a social person and reverting him to his time, the paper tries to reveal the countless ties between musical culture and social culture,considering the influence of many social factors on a person's art style such as social environment, cultural environment and the trend of literature and art.This paper is divided into three parts:The firt part: The composition features about Sarasate. It mainly introuduces Sarasate's whole life, the classfication of his works and the basic peculiarity of his works. It emphasizes that Sarasate used the unique structural principle and distinct national characteristics in his composition, and reveals that his works are characterized of nationalization.The second part: The performance style about Sarasate. This part analyzes his glaring skill, his personal pursuit for tone color as well as his original ability to explain the works in order to sum up the unique trait of his performance style.The third part: The cultural analysis of Sarasate's style character. This part analyzesthe reasons why Sarasate formed his style in three aspects-- the spirit of age, thehistory of the violin and the Spanish culture.
