Politeness Equivalence In Translation

In this paper, a way of doing translation study from the aspect of politeness is provided. And the concept of politeness equivalence is put forward. The study of politeness equivalence has great impact on translation. As an aspect of translation equivalence, politeness equivalence can be used as a standard to evaluate a translation's quality. An acquaintance with politeness theories would lead to a better understanding of the original text and a more successful translation.This paper is divided into 5 chapters:Chapter 1 is an introduction.In the 2nd Chapter, the author introduces some important theories of politeness, and the differences between eastern and western politeness, especially the study of a Chinese scholar, Gu Yueguo.Chapter 3 is devoted to the discussion of the relationship between politeness and translation and the relationship between politeness equivalence and translation equivalence as well as the significance of politeness equivalence. The discussion is mainly based on Nida's functional equivalence and Qiu Maoru's formula of equivalence vs. translation equivalence. The conclusion of the discussion is: politeness is closely linked with translation. And politeness equivalence is an important aspect of translation equivalence.The focus of Chapter 4 is on the application of politeness equivalence to translation practice. The discussion will be carried out in two aspects: how to achieve politeness equivalence, i.e. the translation skills; and how to judge whether politeness equivalence has been achieved, i.e. the evaluation criteria. In the process of discussion, many examples are cited, mainly from Yang Xianyi's translation of A Dream of Red Mansions in support of the author's opinions.Chapter 5 presents a conclusion for the whole paper. It also points out that this dissertation still has some deficits.
