Commenting On Luther's Humanistic Spirit

As is known to all, Luther was a religious reformer, however, he was an outstanding figure in the age of the Renaissance, and the humanistic thought had an effect on Luther by what degree, which needs us to research systematically. Through Luther's life, reviewing his words and works, as well as analyzing his concepts and actions, we come to realize a shock of a strong humanistic spirit. It embraces the following aspects: First, a concept of advocating the Classics. Luther studied the classical language, moreover researched into the Holy Bible, then obtained a result of "Justification by faith". Second, a concept of individual character liberty. It embodied not only Luther's theory of Justification by faith, but also the life concept of following his inclinations. Third, a concept of equality. Luther put his principle which all Christian were clergy into equality in personality and religious service. Fourth, a concept of controlling consumption. Luther stressed on reducing religious holiday and simplifying religious rites. Fifth, a concept of nationalism. It reflected that Luther strived to the decision-making power of economy , national church and judicature, in addition he translated Greek Bible into German. Sixth, a concept of humanistic education. Luther discussed the importance of education, at the same time, also emphasized a concept of the secular education the general education and the social education, then clarified some specific measures on the education reform.In a word, the humanistic spirit glimmered on Luther himself everywhere, and he was named as a prominent humanist. Therefore, we regard his leading Reformation as a special expression of the Renaissance with the ample reasons.
