Nationalism that takes patriotism as essential feature is very important in China' s modern history. The bourgeois have propagated nationalism on a grand scale in the course of 1911 Revolution. Tao Cheng-zhang' s nationalism thought is representative in the propaganda. The article attempts to appraise Tao Cheng-zhang' s nationalism thought from its forming, content and characteristic.The first part has described the forming course and reason. The article divides three phases for his thought: the germinating stage (from the childhood to 1894), the shaping stage (from 1895 to 1904) and the mature stage (from 1907 to 1908).Then, the article regards the paternal teaching and influence from the sages in the same country as the foundation of his nationalism thought; keeping in touch with the west and studying in Japan make his thought abundant; And, His revolutionary activities promote his thought to be mature as well as the bourgeois democratic revolutionists' s effect on him such as Sun Yat-sen and Zhang Tai-yan.The second part has discussed the content. Anti-Manchu is the key content. He objects to Manchu' s national oppression to the Han nationality as well as the class oppression. To beagainst imperialism is his characteristic part. He realizes the invasion means of the imperialism countries, and insists that all the Asian oppressed nationalities should joint together and object to imperialism each.The third part summarizes the characteristic, the first characteristic is the combining together for the nationalism thought which regards anti-Manchu as center and the democratic revolutionary thought which takes being against to the feudal autarchy as center; the second is, he uses history as his propagating means; And the content of his nationalism thought is enriched by practice, this third. After all, Tao Cheng-zhang is a bourgeois democratic revolutionist, though the content and characteristic of his nationalism thought are abundant, there exists some certain limitations.
