The Study On Yupian

Gu Ye-wang's Yupian (顾野王的《玉篇》) is a famous writings in the history of dictionary, scriptology, philology and scholium. It is the first regular script dictionary in our country, which is the earliest dictionary existed today after Shuowen (《说文》). It carries on Shuowen's (《说文》) compile tradition and superior over it more or less and enlightens dictionaries afterwards as well. It absorbs experience from dictionaries like Erya (《尔雅》). Its Fanqie (反切) is nearly fifty years earlier than Qieyun (切韵) and reflects some Chinese phonological phenomena from ancient Chinese to the middle ancient Chinese. Yupian (@) has changed appearance after SunQiang (孙强) increased words and decreased explanations in Tang Dynasty (唐) and Chen Peng-nian (陈彭年) revised in Song Dynasty (宋) . The dissertation is trying to study Yupian (《玉篇》) comprehensively from aspects of compile intention, regular of selecting words, editions, contents, achievement and limitation so to investigate the reasons why the book has been collated and revised continuously during one thousand years by scholars domestic and abroad.First, introduce the author GuYe-wang (顾野王) and Yupian's (《玉篇》) producing. Evolution of the forms of Chinese characters and the pragmatical function of dictionary impelled Yupian's (《玉篇》) emerging. Dictionaries and achievements of scholium had supplied it with materials and solid foundation all of which are background. What's more, introduce compile intention, regular of selecting words and editions as well.Second, study the incomplete Yupian (《玉篇》) from aspects of compilation, the forms of character, pronunciation of character, character's meaning, radicals and technical terms including the comparative study on Shuowen (《说文》) and Yupian (《玉篇》) . The former seeks character's original meaning according to small seal script, while the laterexplains both original meaning of character and its extended meaning, and quotes other books and dictionaries widely.Third, study the revised Yupian (《玉篇》) from aspects of compilation, the forms of character, pronunciation of character, character's meaning, radicals, appendix and technical terms including the comparative study on incomplete and revised Yupian (《玉篇》) .Finally, estimate Yupian (《玉篇》) from its achievements and limits. It is the first regular script dictionary in our country, and gathers some variant forms of characters and reserve some words' explanations, which make it very important in the history of dictionary, scriptology, scholium and phonology. However, there are some shortcomings existed in Yupian (《玉篇》) because of subjective and objective limitations. But we should not make excessive demands on ancients and it is out of question that Yupian (《玉篇》) has an important place in history of academic circles of our country.
