Research On Ruan Yuan And Xue Hai Academy

With a broad eyesight with rich materials this thesis is to make a systemic research on the Xue Hai Academy which was built by Ruan Yuan.Ruan Yuan, lived in the Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang period of Qing Dynasty, was known for not only his high official title, but also his academic achievement. As a nucleus-people of Yangzhou school, he took Confucian classics as academic foundation, didn't look down upon other schools, and was called a rearguard of Hanxue by Jiang Fan. Wherever he worked, Ruan Yuan devoted himself to enlarging education cause including building schools, publishing books.Xue Hai Academy is one known Shuyuan Ruan Yuan set up in Guangzhou when he was in charge of Guangdong and Guangxi. In 1824 Ruan Yuan built Xue Hai Academy on northern Guangzhou Mountain Yuexiushan, an ideal place for study, where there were many interesting place of Han-tang Dynasty, beautiful landscape, fit-for-people circumstance.There were a series of rules including in charge of teaching managing, fund, books, block, guarding, teaching party. The rules gave guarantee for the normal teaching activity and also form an example for later Shuyuan.What were taught in Xue Hai Academy were classics, history, poem and ode, which is different from other schools' curriculum that aimed for imperial examinations. Before 1903 when it was closed, Xue Hai Academy had collected a group of learned scholar and trained a great deal of person with ability, of whom there were 260 students studying specialties. It also published many books, of which the most prominent is Classics' explanation of Great Qing.Xue Hai Academy is a marker of the Chinese Shuyuan history, students and books of Xue Hai Academy had made great influence to the Chinese Culture.
