Abstract/Summary:
In China, the teaching of oral English is neglected at the elementary and secondary stage. At the advanced stage, courses concerned with oral English are set up only for English majors. However, the social requirement for English learners' speaking ability is continually increasing, so, it is urgent for us language educators to research into the ways to improve learners' oral ability. This thesis mainly discusses which elements affect oral English teaching and learning most and how they work. It illustrates how factors such as age, cognitive style, language aptitude, attitude and motivation, personality and mentality as well as learner's strategies give influence onIVforeign language learning and learner's final achievement. And enlightenment drawn from discussions on each of these ingredients is put at the end of each section. The third chapter touches details in oral English teaching. Argumentation continues with regard to the design of scientific and complete curriculum, the diathesis of a qualified oral English teacher and the effective teaching methods at different stage of oral English teaching. The fourth chapter involves with the necessity of making culture as an organic part of language teaching.
