Lexical Studies On TanglüShuYi

TangLuShuYi (Tang Code including authoritative annotation) is the state code of Tang dynasty. As a book with more than two hundred thousand characters,it is a grand code,covering assorted aspects of society. TangLuShuYi is evidently special in its language for it is a legal document. This research just gives preliminary studies and deals only with the lexical aspect. The first chapter of this research discusses the language characteristics of TangLuShuYi,and the relation between TangLuShuYi and medieval Chinese. TangLuShuYi has a lot of polysyllabic words and colloquial words. Its vocabulary is close to the other documents' at that time. So,to some extent,TangLuShuYi is important in Medieval Chinese study,and should not be ignored. In chapter two,special words are mainly discussed. Legal documents,generally speaking,are closely related to a country's politics,and can fully reflect the law,the administration,the bureaucrat,and other rules and regulations. The special words,such as used in the law,in the administration,in the bureaucrat,and in regulations,or,in military affairs,in architecture,in economy,are investigated in detail,aiming at a sketchily knowledge of the everyday expressions in Tang dynasty. In chapter three,on account of special documents,the lexical particularity of TangLuShuYi is analyzed. Many words,though with the same characters,have different meanings in TangLuShuYi. Sometime the special meaning relates to general meaning,sometime it doesn't. On the other hand,non-special words in TangLuShuYi,in a way,are also special. They may have unusual meanings,or,they are rare used in other resources. The fourth chapter deals with the word-explaining in TangLuShuYi. TangLuShuYi is the explanatory note to TangLti (Tang Code),so many contents of Zhu(first explanation) and Shu(second explanation) are interpretations to words of TangLu. These interpretations are most important in grasping the meanings of a word accurately in Tang dynasty. At first,the types of word-explaining are sketched out,then,some examples,such as fudian,dengshijueshi,sanga ng,zhezhl,are given out to show the important values of word-explaining in TangLuShuYi. The last chapter of this research presents a general analysis of word-formation on the words in TangLuShuYi. Flip-flop words and the relation in a given pair are discussed in the first section,and some active morphemes are analyzed in the latter,showing that it is important to master the meaning of a word through its morphemes.
