As we ali know D.H. Lawrence was a vvriter who was very fond of probing into the relation between the self and the external world, man and woman. When he probed into this two relations ,he applied the same principle :the principle of balance.Firstly Lavvrence believed that the self and the external world must keep balance and the external world must not enslave and gobble up the self. Nature could keep balance with the self. But the industrial civilization and the religion gobbled up the people's flesh and sense organ which destroyed the balance between the self and the extemal vvorld .How could resume the balance ? Lawrence had his suggestion . At first he intended to resume the balance by setting up harmonious carnal knowledge. But soon he gave up and hoped to destroy the old vvorld and set up a new vvorld .Secondly Lawrence believed that man and woman must keep balance too . The balance have two meanings : l .the balance between the flesh and the æ±irit .2.the balance betvveen the possession and independence.Lavvrence believed that this tovv relations vvere related : the later wasthe way to realize the former.Lawrence's applying the principle of balance in his novels had some reasons . He was in the state of imbalance in ali his life . When he was born his mother gave him the love which was given usuallv by lover. This unusual love plundered Lawrence' normal human nature .When he grew up he encountered the lovers who were short of either flesh or æ±irit which made Lavvrence lost his balance.Although Lavvrence' suggestion to resumed the balance between the self and the external world is idealistic, his æ±irit of striving after the ideal world for the human is worth remembering.
