D.H. Lawrence is one of the most unique and controversial novelists of the twentieth century in English and world literature. He is honored as the phoenix of English literature. With his abundant legacies of fiction, poetry, literary criticism, philosophy and psychology, D. H. Lawrence is worthy of every reader's attention. Among his literary contributions, his achievement in fictional writing is most eminent. By exploring his balance art this thesis just intends to show the novelist's great achievement in fiction. Chapter One focuses on Lawrence's balance art from the angle of the style. Lawrence's balance art refers first and for most to the balance between realism and modernism. In Lawrence's novels, the principle of literary creation is realistic in nature. He reproduced life according to the true colors of life and he laid stress on representation of the factuality of life, paid attention to the objective attitude in writing, and attached importance to the authenticity of the artistic description. Meanwhile, his novel has distinct modernistic features. He employed many modernistic techniques in his novels, such as psychoanalysis, interior monologue, abundant symbols and images with metaphorical meanings. The blending of realism and modernism constitutes a perfect balance state in his novels. This balance shows the legacy of English literature, the innovation of English literature, and demonstrates a perfect mutual complement. Chapter Two analyzes Lawrence's balance art from the thematic point of view. Lawrence's balance art embodies the balance between the two sexes. Lawrence deeply and successfully explored the relationship between the two sexes all his life. He believed that two lovers, or a couple, are like two magnetic poles. They repel and resist one another and at the same time attract and need one another. Lawrence deemed that man and woman could achieve a perfect balanced relationship through conflict. To keep balance is the key point in the harmonious relationship between the two sexes. In the balanced relationship between the two sexes, love is the main rhythm. Love is the foundation of the ideal male-female relationship. Love needs man and woman's equal creation. Love needs sexual and spiritual harmony. Love needs the freedom that man and woman have for their own. Love needs equality between man and woman in marriage. Love can make man and woman reborn. Lawrence searched the ways to establish a harmonious and perfect relationship between the two sexes in modern industrial society. Chapter Three discusses Lawrence's balance art from the perspective of the settings of his novels. Lawrence's balance art embodies the balance between man and nature. He made a lot of splendid depictions of nature in his novels and expressed a passionate love for the natural world and unique understanding of the nature. He revealed the relationship between man and nature in his novels. On the one hand man and nature merge into each other. Man is the result of natural selection in the process of biological evolution. Man is the child and an inalienable part of nature. Nature has a mysterious power which can awake man's instinct and endow man with the natural attribute. On the other hand, man and nature reciprocally oppose and conflict with each other. With the development and prosperity of capitalist industrialization, the natural world is overexploited and seriously destroyed. The relationship between man and nature becomes unbalanced. This unbalance not only destroys the harmony and stillness of nature but also causes severe consequence: that is the human's alienation. Lawrence advocated that man and nature should be closely linked, and should achieve a balanced harmony. As the Lawrentian critic F. R. Leavis pointed out, it is The Rainbow and Women in Love that most demand attention; together they constitute Lawrence's greatest works. They represent the supreme technical innovation and creative achievement of Lawrence. In these two masterpieces Lawrence's balance art achieves a perfect state. Lawrence is no doubt a writing wit, a person to pursue perfection .He breaks loose the fetter of literary genres and describes the world in his eyes in an unique style. He is a skillful artist, a daring adventurer, and a great prophet. His balance art discussed in this thesis demonstrates Lawrence's excellent achievement in fiction. Lawrence's...
