The reform and opening up promoted the development of Chinese language greatly,including outstanding performance is the creation of a large number of new words. For the study of new words has been one of the hot contemporary linguistics, through the efforts of many scholars, the field has achieved fruitful results. This paper studied the phenomenon of neologism, that the phenomenon of old words has new meaning, belonging to a type of new words.〝Modern Chinese Dictionary〞5th edition has been published in six years , many of the modern Chinese word meanings have been changed. This article studied the phenomenon of neologism in Chinese in recent years combining the〝Modern Chinese Dictionary〞5th EditionThis paper compared〝Modern Chinese Dictionary〞5th Edition with〝Modern Chinese Dictionary of New Words〞(edited by Kang Shiyong Shanghai Dictionary Publishing House in November 2009 1st Edition) and〝Contemporary Chinese Dictionary〞(Zhonghua Book Company, October 2009 version 1), and referred to the new words of 2006 -2009 year written by the Ministry of Education Language Information Management Division , Baidu Encyclopedia and papers about neologism. Finally, we collected 714 words, and then excluded which did not belong to neologism, locked 289 words as study of this paper.This paper sampled the new and old meanings'use of 289 words in this corpus in the People's Daily, analyzed the use of their numbers by the combination of quantitative and qualitative, and then presented the change of register from there perspectives. In-depth studies within linguistics, this paper analyzed the causes of neologism using the theory of cognitive linguistics metaphor and metonymy theory, and resolved the features of neologism from the voice, semantics, syntax and pragmatics. The last part studied the "Modern Chinese Dictionary"5th Edition by compared to the old version, analyzing the principles, standards, and six major cases about how new meaning was defined by the dictionary. At last, some tentative suggestions of which new meanings should be defined in the reprint were given.
