| Terms are indispensable in the modern science. Legal terms occupy the most significant status in legal science. The translation of legal terms plays a key role in the communication of legal cultures. The most important issue for legal translation depends on the interpretation of the legal terms among various legal systems and conveyance and formulation of the terms concerned in different languages, until the legal terms with the legal cultures in the source language are accurately translated into their counterparts, that is, the translated terms, which can be understood successfully by the readers of the target language.Translation, as a vital means of intercultural exchange, plays an important role as a bridge over the cultural gap among different cultures. The function and influence of cultural elements has aroused more and more interest of translators when they conduct translation. In the perspective of cross-culture, it is known that cultural elements are always the main difficulties and obstacles in translation. There is no exception in translation of legal terms which are rich embodiment of legal cultures. Therefore, this study is an experimental expedition on how to deal with the cultural elements of legal terms in legal translation.The present study is a probe into the translation of legal terms in view of cultural elements. This study mainly consists of two parts. The first part presents a thorough and systematic analysis of cultural elements of legal terms in the languages of Chinese and English in the process of legal translation. Among the elements are social institution, legal system, legal function, legal institution and procedure, culture psychology and way of thinking, and these elements may be the main problems that translators are likely to confront in legal translation between Chinese and English. In the second part, the study suggests some principles and translating strategies to deal with the cultural elements in translation of legal terms.
