At present, the Art Design teaching in local universities and colleges is forming its own regional characteristics. It urges us to consider seriously the following issues: To arouse students'interest, how can regional cultural resources can be integrated into the teaching of art design practice? How can the content of practice teaching modules be arranged and allocated? In the surrounding of globalization, the national characteristics in environmental art design tend to be essential. The modern teaching of environmental art design should keep inheriting and developing excellent national traditional culture, and embodying the specialities of national culture. Xinjiang, as the most northwest province full of foreign cultural features, pocesses a large number of earth buildings. Due to owning rich national cultural features and unique spatial patterns, the earth folk houses in Xinjiang can be applicable teaching resources. If it is used properly, the advantage of local resources will be exploited and the local teaching characteristics will be manifested. The purpose of developing art design teaching with regional features is to demonstrate unique national culture and create a completely new educational pattern through combining culture, arts with science and technology. In view of this, this thesis takes Xinjiang earth folk residences in house design course as the research object. By discussing the necessity of teaching cases of Xinjiang earth folk residences, the paper analyzes the present situation of art design teaching in local colleges and universities and points out their requirements of environmental art design in west regions, which are to give priority to the potential of local traditional culture and make efforts to inherit and develop regional culture. The study emphasizes that the development of environmental art design can not exist without local cultural features; and to foster the awareness of national culture is an effective way of developing high-quality design talents with national spirits. It investigates the course design and developmental stages of house design course and the results show that the house design course in our department are fostering its own regional features. This paper claims the importance of integrating"teaching"with"learning","theory"with"practice"in the arrangement of teaching programs, the experience of teaching process and the employment of teaching methods in the case study of Xinjiang earth folk residences. The unique feature of art education is to arouse students'interests and potentials in improving their design ability. It also points out that introducing regional culture is an approach to fostering students'habit of paying attention to the reality, is a good channel for students to learn outstanding culture and traditions and absorb the essence of national culture, and is a essential way to develop creative talents.
