In a general sense, intellectuals are a type of people who express their perspectives and understandings of lives and world with abstract symbols. The historical traditions between Eastern and Western worlds are different from each other. There is always a tight relationship between music and intellectuals. After Western culture came into China in late Qing Dynasty, the traditional intellectual class was replaced by modern intellectuals, compared to the traditional intellectual class, the structures of knowledge, values, and music lives of intellectuals in this period were altered tremendously. The object of study in this article is a typical case in this issue.This article, by means of field research and oral history in ethnomusicology, records and enteprets the 80 years' experience of the object of study. Centre on the personal history, the article also discusses the relationship between intellectuals and music in five aspects:geographic humanistic environment, Christian music, musical education, relationship between family and intellectual class, history and its transformation. It also attempts to explore a way to do a mutual establishment between intellectuals and music, society and history, and a way that realize the cultural adjustment of intellectuals' lives. In addition, based on the case study, make a conclusion, and attempts to provide suggestions for intellectuals' musical lives.
