Henry Miller, whose works are mostly autobiographical, is regarded to have accomplished the best confessional works after Rousseau. Through describing himself and his surroundings, Miller displays his action and the world in his mind to the audience and makes deep confession towards it Nowadays, however, few Chinese scholars realized it.This article, adopting intensive reading method and general study method, firstly makes a conclusion that it is absolutely feasible to bring Miller's autobiographical novels into confessional literature. Then the article discusses Miller's confession consciousness systematically both in content and in forms. Furtherly, the article explores characteristics of Miller's confession which is self-conscious,profound and optimistical. And although Miller's confession seems to be violent, Henry Miller still had the deepest love and the infinite hope for this world and for the human beings. Through sex, art and religion, he firmly believe that people can hew a piece of paradise in the corner of their own souls.Although whether his unique way of self-salvation can lead human to happiness is still controversial, his confession is of great value. The humanistic care embodied in his works, the psychological world he had been searching for, and his un-pessimistic efforts, have been inspiring innumerable readers and promoting them to achieve self-liberation in their own ways. |
