To find out the efficient, practical and scientific set mode of pronunciation exercises, this paper, based on three independent sets of textbooks of elementary spoken Chinese which are widely used in china, studies the design of pronunciation exercises. Firstly, this paper clearly defines the range of phonetic teaching. Secondly, it analyzes the phonetic exercises of every single textbook and makes comparison among the three sets of textbooks, regarding two aspects, i.e. the contents of the exercises and their patterns and quantities. Thirdly, by applying the phonetic teaching theories, it counts all the data completely and analyzes their difference, advantages and disadvantages. After discussing some key problems about the design of phonetic exercises, this paper assesses the effectiveness of each set of textbooks. Besides, we offer suggestions on phonetic teaching as follows:1) Formulate a phonetic outline.2) Teach and exercise phonetics intensively in the beginning.3) Carry out phonetics periodically and variously for a long term.4) Put great emphasis on reading and listening.5) Emphasize dynamic phonetic skills, such as intonations.
