Many schools of constructivism occurred during the course of its development. They all have a common ground:the student as the cognitive subject plays an irreplaceable role in the construction of meaning. Views of Knowledge, the cognitive subject——student, the learning process itself are discussed in this paper, and how the theory is applied in a Chinese characters textbook——Hanzi. The research has been done in these aspects. The knowledge of hanzi is not displayed in a direct way; instead, a personalized cartoon figure Beibei is chosen as a guide to help students to explore the secrets of hanzi. Beibei's guidance can be seen in every chapter. The concept of cooperation and situation could be found in the design of this textbook. In every chapter, questions and well-constructed hanzi knowledge are implanted in the textbook Hanzi, for the attempt to provide a real situation for learners in order to reach its aims to help them to accomplish the meaning constructing of hanzi. This paper focuses on the theories of Constructivism relating to learning activities and how these theories are demonstrated in the textbook Hanzi, for the purpose of giving some suggestions and guidance for the material design in teaching Chinese as a second language.
