The Research On Competency Of College Peer Counselors

With the importance of mental health education for high school students enhanced, peer counseling has become a new attempt. as school counseling has been launched deeper, how to build a contingent of college peer counselors has become a popular issue. However, the subject for competence researches is not so diversified, as to college peer counselors, current researches hasn't mentioned.Therefore, it is necessary for us to carry out a research about college peer counselors'competency in order to help to enhance the development of peer counseling.Thus, this research takes 850 college peer counselors as research target, based on several research methods, such as questionnaires, the Behavioral Event Interview and seminar. We designed"the Questionnaire about competency of college peer counselors"to explore a model of competency for college peer counselors and their competency level in different demography variables.The result of this study brings about the following conclusions:First, competency for college peer counselors includes vocational personality trait; achievement orientation; communication; self-improvement trait; vocational attitude and character; comprehensive relevant knowledge and experience.Second,"the Questionnaire about competency of college peer counselors has high reliability and validity, after being checked out.Third, different demography variables have different roles in affecting competency level of college peer counselors.Peer counselors of different sexes are different in vocational personality trait and vocational attitude and character; peer counselors of different grades in self-improvement trait; but, peer counselors with different specialties have no differences in affecting competency level of college peer counselors.
