A Study On National Cultural Connotation Of The Words Of Characteristic Flowers And Trees In Chinese And English

As a manifestation of the national cultural semantic feature in the language, national cultural connotation reflects the history, customs, and habits of the nation and is heavily tinted with that nation's culture. It is an additional cultural connotation attached to a linguistic unit on the basis of its conceptual meaning. Therefore, without the national and cultural background, it is almost impossible to understand the implication of the language unit. The purpose of the study on national cultural connotation is to combine language with culture on the basis of certain culture and history and ethnic customs in order to achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication.This paper mainly researches the national cultural connotation of the words of characteristic flowers and trees in Chinese and English. People, with different cultural background, use their own characteristic flowers and trees to express the unique cultural connotation of their nations, making the words of flowers and trees contain characteristic national cultural connotation reflecting the distinctive national and regional features. The national cultural connotation of corresponding words in different languages generally have various types such as the sameness, similarity, difference, contrary, vacancy, etc. This paper, which is directed against the vacancy type only, selects more typical words of flowers and trees in the culture of Chinese and English as the object of the study, and only analyses the national cultural connotation of these characteristic words of flowers and trees in the culture of Chinese and English, that is, the national cultural connotation of the words of flowers and trees in only one language and culture; and attempts to concretely research the national cultural connotation of the characteristic words of flowers and trees in the culture of Chinese and English drawing on the theories and methods of linguistics, cultural linguistics, sociology, psychology, folklore and national cultural semantics; but also explores the causes of the national cultural connotation of the characteristic words of flowers and trees in the two different languages through the aesthetic consciousness, religion, ways of thinking and the natural environment; and finally concludes the significance of the national cultural connotation of the characteristic words of flowers and trees in Chinese and English in the English teaching, translation, teaching Chinese as a foreign language and cross-cultural communication.In cross-cultural communication, the words containing characteristic national cultural connotation often become the important reason causing national cultural conflicts. Therefore, to avoid the cross-cultural communication conflicts will be the value of this paper, and the hope is that this paper will be enlightenment for the study of the English teaching, translation, teaching Chinese as a foreign language English and the comparative study between English and Chinese, etc.
