Abstract/Summary:
My present dissertation attempts to incorporate textual analysis into theoretical exploration to illustrate how brilliant and exquisite the narrative strategies of Sons and Lovers are, drawing on the narratological theories of some theorists such as well-known French narratologist Genette. It will focus on three aspects:narrative time, narrative focalization and narrative manners to delve into how D. H. Lawrence inherits and innovates the narrative literary tradition in terms of the narrative strategies of this autobiographical novel. Since its publication in1913, domestic and foreign multitudinous scholars have made a thorough research; however, the narratological approach to this novel, I think, hasn't been given due consideration.Although close inspection of fictional texts has recently been attacked as outmoded formalism, it is no wonder that a detailed textual analysis will be helpful of gaining a better understanding of Sons and Lovers. In addition, my investigation is different from traditional approaches in that it concentrates on treating narratological theories and models as a tool of textual analysis for the purpose of gaining more subtle and precise penetration of the narrative strategies of Sons and Lovers. Not only this may make us more comprehensive to Lawrence's research, moreover may promote our understanding about classical narratology and provide an example of textual analysis. Undoubtedly, it is the unique narrative strategies in Sons and Lovers that endow the novel with enduring charm and influence.
