Bible is one of the most widely spread books in the history of human beings. It is as much the Christian classics as the treasure of western civilization. Song of Songs, also titled Songs of Solomon, is regarded as the classical creation of Bible and is renowned by the beautiful love in it. In all the Chinese Versions of Bible, the Chinese Union Version (CUV)has been handed down for more than a hundred years, which occupies a leading position and couldn't be substituted by other versions till now. Based on text analysis theories, the present thesis is designed to analyze the Song of Songs in CUV so as to testify the efficiency of text analysis in translating the Song of Songs in Chinese.Traditional linguistic research suggests that translation studies should explore issues at lexical and sentential level. However, in recent years, more and more translation theorists, both at home and abroad, have applied text analysis theories to translation practice research. The reasons lie in:both text analysis and translation practice require precisely expressing the meaning of the text rather than the sentences. It is a new perspective to express the meaning of the text from discourse. Text analysis as a unit of translation will be the tendency of translation research in the future. This thesis studies Song of Songs in CUV from the perspective of text analysis. It focuses on a comprehensive examination of the transformation law of Song of Songs in CUV from the three aspects of cohesion/coherence, theme/rheme and thematic progression, in the hope of giving enlightenment and guidance to translation practice. The thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter includes the introduction, research background, motivation, methodology and also the framework of the thesis. Chapter two is a literature review, concerning the development of text translation analysis and literary text research both at home and abroad as well as relative researches on Bible translation. Chapter three provides the theoretical foundation, explores relative theories of text analysis, including grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion, theme/rheme theory and thematic progression. Chapter four introduces Bible and the Song of Songs, including the introduction to Bible and CUV, as well as the introduction of the author, literature style and the translation of the Song of Songs. Chapter five is the main part of this thesis, which makes a specific analysis of Song of Songs in CUV from the perspective of text analysis. It focuses on the aspects of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion, theme/rheme theory and thematic progression to analyze the Song of Songs by illustration. Chapter six is the conclusion. In both English and Chinese, various cohesive devices are used to make the text coherent. Converting all kinds of cohesive devices reasonably will contribute to the translation coherence; proper text structure and thematic progression are effective methods to make the translation text cohesive and coherent. In brief, the thesis takes the Song of Songs in CUV as the research object. Through the combination of theoretical elaboration and practical study of CUV and by comprehensively analyzing the transformation and application of cohesive devices, theme/rheme and patterns of thematic progression in the languages of English and Chinese, it attempts to make clear how problems of transformation in the course of E-C translation are dealt with. The regularity of the problems is summarized and solutions are proposed. It is expected that the thesis can provide a valuable reference for the future Bible translation from the perspective of text analysis.
