News Feature Translation Guided By Skopostheorie

Over recent decades the explosive growth of globalization and regional integration has fueled parallel growth in news feature translation. As China has been in a good economic state and has deepened the policy of reform and opening up to the world and also the world has been into the information era, people more and more pay attention to intercultural communication. News, as a kind of culture-carrier, has proved the most important medium in the intercultural communication. The news feature translation differs from the traditional equivalence-based translation practice and it focuses on the target audience. News feature is a hybrid that requires you to combine a reporter's skill with a storyteller's art. It has attracted many readers because it provides with fresh ideas, vivid characters, and delicate writing skills. The emerging popularity of news feature and the strengthened intercultural communication call for more translations in this field. However, scholars have not concerned about this field until today. Thus, news feature translation studied in this dissertation opens a new field for translation studies and presents challenging questions to translators and translation scholars for consideration.With the Skopostheorie as the theoretical basis, this thesis tries to bridge the gap between the translation practice of news feature and the long established equivalence-based translation criteria. The aim of the thesis is to introduce new perspective to the application of Skopostheorie to the translation of news feature and use to guide the translation of news feature. The main objectives of this thesis are to testify the feasibility of applying the Skopostheorie to news feature translation and to solve common problems or errors in the translation of this type of text, to make the best use of this theory in the practice. In order to verify the feasibility of the application of the Skopostheorie to the translation of news feature, the theoretical analysis in the paper is mainly qualitative. The author cites some persuasive examples and compares source text with target text. The author gathers useful materials together and analyzes these materials in the paper. The results gained from the analysis are positively correlated with the perspectives of Skopostheorie in news feature translation, that is, the ends justify the means. The analysis indicates that Text Typology Theory plays an important role in the news feature translation. Text type analysis is helpful to identify the type of news feature and select a proper translational method. Due to combining the Skopostheorie with practice of news feature translation, news feature translation gets rid of casualness and increases purpose. News feature is not merely to provide events, but to improve the readability to arouse readers'interest. Apart from certain news events, the relevant background information and the current situation, etc, shall all be considered and included in the feature text. Therefore, if translators translate it well enough, they will be able to show the reader more vivid and touching information.
