Translation Strategies For English News Headlines Of China Daily Website From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

With the rapid development of the society and economy, the communication betweenChina and the world is getting more frequent. Massive information is transmitted by translatingthe news report. News communication becomes more and more important; it has a greatinfluence to the China and the whole world. News has its great advantages. It plays a more andmore important role in the cross cultural communication and mutual understanding. Therefore,the study of the news is very meaningful. However, in people’s daily life, facing various newsreports, people always decide to read the news or not after they scan the news headlines due totheir limited time. Thus, during the news translation process, the translation of news headlinesis particularly important for news headlines act as the soul of the news.At present, there are many studies about the translation of news headlines from newspaper,but relatively rare in website. Consequently, the author takes the online news headlines as itsobject, and China Daily news headlines translation practice as its corpus. On the basis of thestudy about300news headlines from July to December in2011in China Daily website. Theauthor tries to find out some proper strategies from the perspective of Skopostheorie. TheSkopostheorie gets rid of the limitations in traditional equivalence translation theories, andmeanwhile inherits the rational parts of traditional translation theories, which has opened up anew area to the translation study. Its major contribution is that it introduces the target text to thetranslation criterion, and it acts as the criterion of the translation.According to Skopostheorie, translation is an action intended to achieve a certain aim,which emphasizes on the target text and the target readers rather than the source text and thestatus of the translator. Besides, the translation strategies depend on the aim of the target text.The author illustrates some detailed theories which proposed by some outstanding Germantranslation scholars：such as the three rules put forward by Hans J. Vermeer, that is to say, theSkopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule；the theory of translational action by JustaHolz-Manttari and the principle of function plus loyalty by Christiane Nord. This thesiscombines the function of the soft news headlines and the factors which effect the news headlinestranslation. Meanwhile, the criteria of news headlines translation have also been mentioned.From the perspective of the Skopostheorie, some translation strategies applied to practical newsheadlines translation, such as: literal translation, expansion, omission, restructuring andadaptation. This thesis provides a theoretical support for the news headlines translation. It ishoped that this thesis can in favor of some people in their future research.
