With the development of the economy in Taicang, the flowing population including businessmen and rural labors has swarmed into the city increasing year by year, and the enrollment rate of their children into public schools is increasing annually. Most flowing children have a healthy psychological development, and mental status is good. However, different areas of economic, social and cultural backgrounds are different, leading to inconsistent levels of psychological development.The objective of this study research mental health state of flowing children in rural junior schools of Taicang City, to provide evidence for the interventions of mental health education, thereby enhancing the overall quality of flowing children. This study also discusses the psychological problems following the formation of the reasons, and put forward the countermeasures, expecting that educators will pay attention to flowing children's mental health.Methods A random cluster sampling method, the symptom checklist (SCL-90) on 284 flowing children in rural junior schools of Taicang City, to investigate mental health evaluation with the comparison between male and female students, urban and rural students, and among grade groups as well as compared with the norm.Results (1) 42 students have psychological distress, accounting for 14.79% of the number of students taking the test, in which 12 students are severely disturbed students, representing 4.23% of the number of students to participate in test.(2) SCL-90 score of the factor scores is lower than the national norm of middle school students, and each factor has a significant difference.(3) There are some differences between male and female students in the psychological problems that girls are more likely than boys in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobia, paranoid symptoms, Obsessive-compulsive symptoms of boys are more obvious, and they are easy to produce impulsive emotions.(4) The factor differences are significant between urban and rural groups in SCL-90 scale and other factors, the remaining factor differences are not significant . Rural students are more likely than urban students in interpersonal sensitivity, phobia and psychotic symptoms.(5) The factor differences are highly significant among grade groups in the SCL-90 scale in the obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, the remaining factor differences are not significant .Conclusion Flowing children in rural junior schools of Taicang City are in good mental health on the whole, but there are some psychological problems. Mental health state of flowing children in rural junior schools of Taicang City are different because of different genders and different areas and we should take appropriate and timely intervention measures for different groups to improve their mental health.Finally, this study explores the causes of psychological problems of flowing children in rural junior schools of Taicang City, and proposes measures to solve their psychological problems.
